Midsummer softly floats into homes
like a carp, glinting fiery red.
You have faith in the sun, but the darkness comes;
the darkness rises instead
over the birdsong at dawn in the woods,
over midnight sleep thick with fear.
The darkness grows out of us: me and you,
the darkness effaces us here.
Sorrel stalks nod towards drowsy homes;
words hang on long threads of sound.
But the darkness swarms from each corner and crack,
it slithers and spreads on the ground.
The darkness fills the forest, the domes;
it floods the sky and the stars.
The darkness pours over the land,
viscous and sticky like tar.
It blots and mars the words of our speech,
obliterating all sound.
It’s in our silhouettes, the prints of our hands,
our fingers searching around.
It’s on our eyelids that tremble with strain,
eyes searching for something bright.
The darkness is light, it is merely light,
that inside us has lost its sight.
Notes: Sorrel is used to make a cold, refreshing soup, traditionally eaten in hot weather.

Тихо вплывает июль в дома
огненным карасём,
веруешь в солнце – приходит тьма,
тьма покрывает всё,
пение птиц над лесной тропой,
тяжесть ночного сна,
тьма вырастает из нас с тобой,
тьма упраздняет нас.
Клонится к сонным домам щавель,
тянуться нити слов,
тьма выползает из всех щелей
и изо всех углов,
и заполняет собою лес,
небо и купола,
тьма растекается по земле,
вязкая, как смола,
и очерняет собою речь,
и упраздняет звук,
тьма – это контуры наших плеч
и отпечатки рук,
пальцев скрещенье, дрожанье век,
и отраженье глаз,
тьма- это точно такой же свет,
только ослепший в нас.

Yana Kane was born in the Soviet Union and came to the US as a refugee at the age of 16. She has a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University, and a PhD in Statistics from Cornell University. Currently, she works as a senior principal engineer in data science. Yana is a student in Fairleigh Dickinson University’s MFA program in Creative Writing, where she has been awarded the Mitch and Lynn Baumeister Scholarship. Родилась и выросла в Ленинграде.
