Or compiling

And perhaps
You even receive
A prize from the tyrant
Priding yourself on keeping quiet when everybody hailed him
Yeah
Just, y’know, like that

The blame is on me, Herman Lukomnikov,
for failing to curb the mad colonels, to call them off.
My poetic lines, however well-styled,
never saved the life of anyone’s child.
I feel that this poem needs to continue,
but there’s no strength left in my mental sinew

I would pack my old valise
For Baden-Baden, Graz or Nice…
But I’m bound to live in Moscow,
Scared and lost, ashamed and cowed.

но я не нахожу подходящее выражение

Dmitri Manin is a physicist, programmer, and translator of poetry. His translations from English and French into Russian have appeared in several book collections. His latest work is a complete translation of Ted Hughes’ “Crow” (Jaromír Hladík Press, 2020) and Allen Ginsberg’s “The Howl, Kaddish and Other Poems” (Podpisnie Izdaniya, 2021). Dmitri’s Russian-to-English translations have been published in journals (Cardinal Points, Delos, The Café Review, Metamorphoses etc) and in Maria Stepanova’s “The Voice Over” (CUP, 2021).
